Abstract Returning a system to desired state under force field involves thermodynamic cost, i.e. work . This cost fluctuates for small-scale from one experimental realization another. We introduce general framework determine the distribution returning facilitated by confining potential with its minimum at restart location. The strategy, based on average over resetting pathways , constitutes robust method gain access statistical information of observables systems. exploit paradigmatic setups, where explicit computations are attainable, illustrate theory. Numerical simulations validate our theoretical predictions. For some these examples, non-trivial behavior fluctuations opens door optimization problems. Specifically, can be minimized an appropriate tuning return rate.
